The Background
Aldi wanted to build a national distribution centre to form part of its logistic network and to support their plans for national store network growth.
A huge 72 acre site was identified five miles from the M1 and plans were submitted to build over 1.3million sqft of warehousing and offices, creating over 750 jobs. The site would operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year on a three shift pattern. During a typical peak morning period between 8am-9am, around 89 cars and 105 HGVs would access the site, and in the peak evening hour from 5pm that could be 79 cars and 94 HGVs.
Due to the sheer scale and high volume of activity on the site, the single biggest concern was the noise pollution that would emanate from the site each and every the day, and its impact on the local communities.
The Solution
As a leading installer of acoustic fencing projects that require unusually high acoustic fencing panels, Aldi approached Procter with the need to reduce the impact of noise from the new development on the nearby residential properties.
Procter proposed a bespoke perimeter system that would not only mitigate the noise impact of the daily site activity, but also act as a secure barrier to site entry, whilst also blending in with the natural local surroundings.
Procter designed and installed a bespoke acoustic system and installed over 930 metres of a 9.1m high fencing panels. The double sided reflective barriers were mounted on steel posts in order to be better suited to high wind loading situations, whilst also designed to meet the stringent noise reduction standards of the Highways Agency.
