The Background
The client and main design/build Contractor wanted Ysgol Bae Baglan to be truly outstanding in terms of quality and facilities, and the head teacher had a clear vision for the new academy.
All of the fencing, gates and street furniture had to fit within the overall design concept and the fencing and gates had to be Secured by Design – yet the budget on the £40-million project was very tight.
The Solution
Procter Contracts worked closely with the main contractor, architect and head teacher to ensure all goals were met.
For example, the academy and architect provided an initial concept for the feature gates, from which Procter Contracts developed detailed designs for bespoke gates that met the necessary safety standards and could be manufactured cost-effectively in Procter’s factory in Bedwas, Caerphilly. Most of the fencing, gates and street furniture were value engineered to remove cost while still meeting the functional and aesthetic requirements.
The Result
Luke Owen, Bouygues UK’s quantity surveyor for the Ysgol Bae Baglan project, was very pleased with Procter Contracts’ involvement, saying:
“Procter Contracts successfully delivered the fencing and street furniture package at Ysgol Bae Baglan. There was a broad spectrum of products from bespoke feature gates to conceptual seating, then to your more common items such as Secure by Design fencing, cycle shelters, bollards and the like.
Procter worked closely with us from the outset to value engineer the specification to enable the client to have everything on his wish list. The products that were manufactured by Procter were of an excellent standard and they were able to significantly reduce lead in times which was fantastic on such a fast-paced project.
Procter successfully managed the purchasing and delivery of products which come from specialist manufacturers, keeping us informed of delivery dates and the like. Procter assisted with the design process by meeting our architect to look at the bespoke gates, which resulted in a safer, improved gate design which improved the quality of the final product and reduced the cost. The whole offsite process was excellent.
The high standards of the design and manufacture process were replicated by the site installation process. Procter adequately resourced the project to achieve increasingly stringent programme constraints. All key dates in their subcontract were met or improved on and there were no surprises in the final account, which was agreed very swiftly and with little effort. Any snags that were identified by the Client were taken seriously and Procter put a gang on site to solely deal with these items and close out within the agreed timescales.”
The Background
As part of the Barnet Council regeneration, Procter Contracts was commissioned to carry out this BSF project for a brand new school.
The Solution
Procter supplied 1.8m pro-twin wire mesh to the site boundary certified by SBD, installed 3.0m 8/6/8 twin wire fence for the sports pitches and a bespoke timber bin store.
Procter not only supplied and installed fencing for the school but also erected hoarding for the site to assist Kier Construction, the contractor for the project.
The Background
Four Oaks primary school opted to retain an existing rising arm barrier that is sited adjacent to the new gate. At school drop-off and pick-up times, the gate is opened and the barrier used to control traffic; at other times, the gate is closed to provide better security.
At the start of the project, Procter Contracts advised the school on its choice of fencing and gates through a process of technical consultation and site survey. There was also a site meeting during which the project was discussed at length and every step explained so that the school was fully aware of exactly what would happen on site.
The Solution
Procter Contracts has installed a Pro-glide Series 20 powered sliding gate for Four Oaks Primary School near Birmingham. In addition, the company supplied and installed perimeter fencing and pedestrian gates. These security measures enabled the school to address a shortcoming identified in a recent Ofsted report.
Although the work was largely undertaken during term time, including the automated gate, the routine operation of the school was not disrupted at all.
Before work could start on the new fencing, Procter’s trained team dismantled and removed the existing school fencing, then completed the groundworks. The team also installed two 1.2 m wide pedestrian swing gates, with the same height, infill and finish as the fencing.
The Result
A major benefit of the Procter Pro-glide Series 20 gates is that they can be installed in as little as one day, which minimises disruption. For the Four Oaks project, the groundworks were completed during the half-term holiday, then the factory-assembled gate was craned into position straight from the delivery lorry a week later. Staff and parents had full access through the gateway at either end of the school day, with the gate installed, commissioned and CE marked within one working day.
“Delighted with all aspects of the job. We are more than happy with the fencing and gates. Procter Contracts provided an excellent service throughout the project, with superb communications. They made sure that we knew exactly what was happening and it was clear that they were very well aware of the needs of our school. Moreover, they completed the installation without disrupting the operations of the school in any way.”
