What are security hoardings?
In high-risk areas where theft is rife
Procter security hoardings are a specialist type of construction site hoarding for projects where conventional hoardings are inadequate. If it is crucial to keep intruders out of a construction site – or to provide temporary protection while work is carried out on perimeter fencing and gates – our security hoardings are far more effective than timber hoardings, aluminium hoardings or steel hoardings, even when they are supplemented by CCTV or other security measures.
We designed our security hoardings after developing our SR1 and SR2 security gates, building on the insights gained there and our extensive experience of perimeter security. Our turnkey service for security hoardings covers site surveys, consultancy, wind calculations, design, rapid installation, maintenance, dismantling, removal and, if required, storage on behalf of the contractor until the reusable hoarding is next needed. Our service also extends to electrical installations where, for example, security lighting is mounted on the hoarding.

Typical applications for security hoardings include construction sites in high-risk areas where theft is rife, sensitive construction projects such as defence establishments and prisons, and existing sites where perimeter security needs to be maintained during repairs or modifications to fencing, walls or gates.
Key Features
- Security hoarding panels and posts are manufactured in our factory to standard sizes but we can easily produce different sizes or custom items to suit a site’s specific requirements. Panels are fabricated from corrosion-resistant galvanised steel sheet 1.6mm thick and posts are made from robust steel sections. Riveted joints mean there are no fasteners accessible from the outside.
- As a result of this construction, the security hoarding is highly resistant to cutting and there are no finger holds or toe holds that could aid climbing. Heavy-duty steel posts are set in concrete to resist unauthorised removal. And with no timber used, the hoardings are also fire-proof.
- Standard panels are 2.4 m wide and 2.4 m high but higher panels can be supplied to order. The robust nature of our security hoarding means it can be reused multiple times.
- To complement the security hoardings, we can also supply matching security gates and access control systems for vehicles and pedestrians.

Security hoardings are essential for high-risk projects, but our timber hoardings, aluminium hoardings or steel hoardings may provide adequate protection for other applications.
What are SR2 swing gates?
Can specify manual or powered/automated operation
SR2 swing gates are high-security entrance gates are independently tested and verified as meeting LPCB standard LPS 1175 Issue 8.0 Security Rating SR2. The gates have been proven to resist a sustained attack using hand tools for a defined period of time and are listed in the LPCB Red Book as being SR2 security rated.
The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) is part of BRE Global, a third-party approvals body, and LPS 1175 is the internationally recognised standard for certification of intruder-resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers.

SR2 swing gates – product overview
SR2 swing gates come in single-leaf and double-leaf formats in a choice of widths and heights for securing pedestrians or vehicle access points. Customers can also specify manual or powered/automated operation, and we offer a variety of access control systems.
While our SR1 swing gates provide good security, the SR2 single and double swing gates offer significantly higher security for only a small increase in cost. When tested against the LPS 1175 standard, the SR2 gates withstand a sustained attack using a broader array of tools and for a longer period. Furthermore, the gates’ internationally recognised SR2 security rating enables specifiers to demonstrate that they have performed due diligence in securing the site perimeter. This can prove invaluable for projects required to meet Secured by Design standards.
Compared with sliding gates, swing gates normally cost less and are often operated manually – which therefore avoids the costs of automation and the associated ongoing maintenance.
Installation normally requires just one day, so disruption at the site being secured is kept to an absolute minimum. Even when we are installing, commissioning and CE marking powered/automated gates, our skilled installation teams usually only need one day.
Key Features
- All-steel construction makes our SR2 swing gates more robust than gates fabricated from other materials, and the mesh used for the cladding provides excellent anti-climb and anti-cut characteristics. The SR2 security rating applies to gates in a variety of heights and widths, so we can supply high-security gates for a variety of different applications. Detailed design features that help the gates achieve their coveted SR2 certification include high-security mesh cladding, hinge protection plates and reinforced latch areas.
- Each gate leaf has a framework fabricated from heavy-gauge RHS (rectangular hollow section) steel, braced as necessary. Robust twin-wire 868 wire mesh is fully welded into the frame to ensure there are no weak points. The 868 mesh is then double-clad with heavy-duty 358 anti-cut, anti-climb mesh that is attached using clamp bars, security bolts and shear cone nuts. The combination of 868 mesh and 358 mesh provides excellent resistance to cutting and climbing while still providing visibility for CCTV systems and security patrols.
- All steel parts are hot-dip galvanised for long-lasting resistance to corrosion and we can optionally apply a tough polyester powder coat on top of the galvanising for further protection and improved aesthetics. Our standard colours are black and green but customers can specify almost any other RAL colour.
- Hot-dip galvanising is in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461 (Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles – Specifications and test methods) and powder coating complies with BS EN 13438 (Paints and varnishes – Powder organic coatings for hot-dip galvanised or sherardized steel products for construction purposes).
- With their robust construction and anti-corrosion finish, SR2 swing gates require little or no maintenance over their long lifetime. Note, however, that powered/automated gates should be inspected periodically to ensure continued safe and reliable operation. For customers wanting regular inspections, we offer maintenance contracts or, if the gates are damaged during use, we can repair them on-site at short notice or at our factory.

What are graphics for construction site hoardings?
Graphics are charged per linear metre
Construction site hoardings are essential for protecting the health and safety of members of the public who might otherwise stray into potentially hazardous areas – and they also secure the site from intruders. However, the ability to apply graphics to hoardings creates an exciting promotional opportunity. Graphics can provide information explaining what is happening at the site, together with photorealistic renderings of the finished project, or graphics can be used as advertising, to promote the developer’s brand, support community groups and local art projects, or simply be a decorative façade during the construction.

Whatever the purpose, graphics are designed to suit the site’s location for viewing by passing traffic, passengers on public transport, people in nearby buildings, pedestrians or any combination of these. As site hoardings often present a large, unimpeded space, they are an excellent opportunity for displaying bold graphics that are visible from considerable distances, unlike most other promotional opportunities in built-up areas. Compared with alternatives, construction site hoarding graphics is a very cost-effective marketing tool, as the hoarding itself is already accounted for within the project’s temporary works budget.
Traditionally construction site hoardings have been drab, often tatty by the end of the project, and purely functional. Applying graphics can transform the appearance of a building site, from start to completion. If advertising space is sold to third parties, the revenue can more than pay for the cost of the hoardings.
Key Features
Procter Contracts offers a choice of specifications for hoarding graphics to suit various project requirements. As standard, hoardings are 2440 mm high (8 feet), but contact us if you need a different height because we can normally accommodate any special requirements. Almost any length can be catered for, including short hoardings as might be required around structural pillars or temporary props. Graphics are charged per linear metre.
- Special materials are used to ensure dirt and graffiti are easily removed from the graphics, they are resistant to scuffing by pedestrians, and the colours are UV-stabilised so they will not fade during the hoardings’ lifetime.
- Digitally printed hoarding graphics can be used in conjunction with timber or steel hoardings, with the graphics being printed directly onto 3 mm Dibond aluminium composite material (ACM). Alternatively, the graphics are printed on vandal-resistant vinyl and applied to 3 mm aluminium composite boards.
- Aluminium composite boards are robust, but for this application, they are normally supported on timber construction site hoardings or reusable steel hoardings. The composite material is long-lasting and weather-resistant, so it will not shrink, expand, warp, corrode, rot or delaminate.
- High-resolution, high-quality printing results in superb imagery with vibrant colours and a level of detail that enables information boards to be read by pedestrians standing in front of the hoarding.
- If required, we can supply and install cover strips, header boards and footer boards to complete the hoarding. In addition, lighting can be installed so the graphics remain visible at night-time, and viewing portals can be incorporated, with or without protective steel mesh, so members of the public can watch the construction work in progress.
- A further option is to change the hoarding graphics as the project progresses, presenting fresh imagery and different marketing messages. This can be done very easily, as the underlying structure of the hoarding remains intact while the graphics are replaced.
Anti-graffiti hoarding graphics
We can also offer bespoke graphics for any site that can feature anti-vandal, di-bond vinyl wraps. It can be digitally printed in full colour, with an LUV anti-graffiti laminate applied.
Typically we work with Contractors on sites looking to showcase a new high-profile development or residential scheme, so that dedicated and eye-catching project information can be used within the design.

What is timber knee rail fencing?
Around car parks and retail areas
Timber knee rail fencing, also known as birdsmouth fencing and diamond rail fencing, is a low-cost and unobtrusive type of wooden rail fencing for boundary demarcation. Being low enough to step over, it provides no perimeter security function. We offer knee rail fencing in a variety of materials, but our timber knee rail fencing is particularly popular for use at schools, around car parks, alongside footpaths, and at sports fields and play areas. It acts as a strong deterrent to drivers who might otherwise stray from roadways and parking areas, as well as discouraging pedestrians from walking on planted borders or lawned areas.
Unlike other types, timber knee rail fencing benefits from a natural aesthetic that is often sought by architects and specifiers.

Timber knee rail is excellent for straight runs, while curved runs can be constructed by careful cutting of the posts and rails. Alternatively, two posts can be installed adjacent to each other with their birdsmouth v-cuts at appropriate angles to support the rails. Timber knee rail fencing benefits from a very simple design and is constructed on-site, so it can easily be built to follow inclines or undulating terrain. In any event, timber knee rail fencing is quick to install.
We use only pressure-treated timber from sustainable UK supplies. The end result is a long-lasting fence that requires minimal maintenance, yet it can easily be repaired should the need arise. Thanks to the high-quality timber treatment and galvanised fixings, we are able to provide a 25-year guarantee.
If you require timber knee rail fences to a different design than the usual diamond rail format, talk to us about your requirements because we can design, manufacture and install bespoke timber knee rail fencing to meet your needs, working from detailed drawings or rough sketches.
Key Features
Our standard timber knee rail fences are constructed on-site using 140 x 140 mm posts with birdsmouth tops that support 100 x 100 mm rails.
Posts are usually secured in the ground using Postfix concrete and the horizontal rails are attached to the posts with galvanised steel birdsmouth straps and galvanised nails.
Heights are normally either 450 or 600 mm and rail lengths are up to 2.4/1.8m.
Applications
- Boundary Demarcation
- Car Parks
- Retail Areas
Our work
We have been in the fencing business for more than 100 years and our firm, which is still family-owned and family-run, can trace its roots back to 1740. We, therefore, have the experience and expertise to meet your needs for timber knee rail fencing.
Our installation teams are employed by us, not sub-contractors, so we maintain complete control over the quality and timing of the installation. Furthermore, we have a number of accreditations so you can be confident that we will adhere to the highest standards of health and safety and workmanship while we are on your site.

What are SR2 sliding gates?
SR2 sliding gates have been proven to resist a sustained attack using hand tools for a specified time.
SR2 sliding gates have been independently tested and verified as achieving security rating SR2 as defined by the internationally recognised LPCB standard LPS 1175 Issue 8.0, and they are therefore listed in the LPCB Red Book. The LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) is part of BRE Global, a third-party approvals body, and LPS 1175 is a standard for certification of intruder-resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers.

SR2 sliding gates – product overview
SR2 sliding gates are manufactured in various widths and heights, mainly for controlling vehicular access but also for pedestrians if large numbers of people need to enter or leave a site. Smaller sizes can be manually operated but the majority of our SR2 sliding gates are powered or automated. If the gate is powered/automated, we also offer a choice of access control systems.
Compared with swing gates, sliding gates are harder to force open, plus they offer the advantage that they can be installed at entrances having a gradient. Sliding gates also require little space when open. Moreover, compared with our SR1 sliding gates, SR2 gates benefit from significantly higher security.
With their internationally recognised SR2 security rating, the SR2 sliding gates enable specifiers to demonstrate they have performed due diligence in securing the site perimeter. This can be a significant benefit for projects required to be Secured by Design.
For very large entrances, we can install a pair of opposing SR2 sliding gates. Contact us for more information about these.
Our skilled construction, mechanical and electrical teams normally complete the installation in just one day, which minimises disruption for the customer.
Key Features
- The design of the SR2 sliding gates is a further evolution of our security sliding gates that we have manufactured successfully for decades. The SR2 gates are all-steel, with the high level of security being achieved through a combination of robust construction, cladding that resists cutting and climbing, reinforced latch areas and other design features.
- Both the gate and support structure are designed and manufactured to high standards so the gate moves smoothly and quietly. Top-quality bearings and guides are used to guarantee a long, trouble-free life for the sliding mechanism.
- SR2 sliding gates feature a robust framework fabricated from RHS (rectangular hollow section) steel, braced as necessary. Cladding is heavy-duty 868 wire mesh, fully welded to the frame. To help these gates achieve their SR2 security rating, they are double-clad with 358 anti-cut, anti-climb welded wire mesh fixed in place using security bolts and shear cone nuts. Nevertheless, the multi-layered mesh cladding still permits visibility for security patrols and CCTV systems.
- Hot-dip galvanising provides long-lasting corrosion resistance for the gate and support structure. Customers also have the option of specifying a tough polyester powder coat on top of the galvanising for further protection and improved aesthetics; our standard colours are black and green, or we can apply almost any other RAL colour on request.
- Galvanising and powder coating are applied in accordance with, respectively, BS EN ISO 1461 (Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles – Specifications and test methods) and BS EN 13438 (Paints and varnishes – Powder organic coatings for hot-dip galvanised or sherardized steel products for construction purposes).
- SR2 sliding gates require little or no maintenance over their long lifetime thanks to the construction from heavy-gauge steel, corrosion-resistant finish and high-quality mechanical components. However, powered or automated gates should be inspected periodically to ensure they are still safe to use and that wear and tear of safety devices and mechanical components will not lead to unreliability. If required, we offer maintenance contracts or, if the gate suffers damage during use, we can undertake repairs on-site or at our factory.
Applications
- data centres
- government and defence establishments
- airports
- docks
- utilities sites
- warehouses and logistics hubs
- commercial and industrial premises
- higher-risk healthcare sites
- sports grounds
