What is timber acoustic fencing?

A popular choice for a wide variety of applications

Timber acoustic fencing is a specialist type of timber fencing that reduces noise transmission. Our timber acoustic fence system is constructed from 22mm thick solid timber boards fixed to timber rails and secured in the ground with galvanised steel posts. Noise attenuation of up to 32dB is possible, making timber acoustic fencing a popular choice for a wide variety of applications. Examples of applications are highways, railways, utility sites, commercial and industrial premises, hospitals and care homesschoolssports grounds and leisure facilities, and residential developments. Unlike other types, timber soundproof fencing benefits from a natural aesthetic that is often sought by architects and specifiers.

Standard timber acoustic panels fulfil most project requirements, but we can also create bespoke timber acoustic fencing for use in space-constrained areas such as bin stores or machinery/plant enclosures. Furthermore, we can design, manufacture and install bespoke gates for pedestrian and vehicular access, utilising the same noise-reducing construction to present a consistent aesthetic.

Key Features

  • Timber acoustic fencing is highly effective at reducing noise transmission by up to 32dB. Timber is easy to work with, so we can create custom panels to fit site requirements, and we can install timber acoustic fencing on a level, sloping or undulating ground, to a maximum height of 12m. Even on the largest fences, we take particular care to avoid air gaps through which sound could travel.
  • When we install timber acoustic fencing alongside highways, the fencing is fully compliant with Highways Agency standards. Where the primary concern is road traffic noise, the fencing also complies with BS EN 1794-1 (Road traffic noise reducing devices. Non-acoustic performance. Part 1: Mechanical performance and stability requirements) and BS EN 1794-2 (Road traffic noise reducing devices. Non-acoustic performance. Part 2: General safety and environmental requirements).
  • All of our timber is responsibly sourced and certified from sustainable UK supplies. The timber is pressure-treated and the steel posts are galvanised, so we are able to give a 25-year guarantee.
  • Our high-quality timber acoustic fencing is an attractive, environmentally-friendly solution to the problem of noise pollution, and the fencing provides the additional functions of boundary demarcation and moderate perimeter security.
  • Talk to us about your requirements, as we can produce timber acoustic fencing in a variety of aesthetically pleasing styles and designs.
  • Timber acoustic fencing achieves most of the noise reduction by reflecting sound waves back off the wooden panels, so the soundproofing improves as fence height increases. The following table shows how noise reduction relates to the fence height and the distance from the noise source.

Our work

We can trace our roots back more than 275 years, and we have been in the fencing business for over 100 years. You can, therefore, be sure that we have the experience and expertise to meet your fencing needs.

A recent project involved the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke timber acoustic fencing, automated gates and pedestrian turnstiles for the new BBC studios in Cardiff Bay. The fencing measured 7m in height and has proven its strength by withstanding storms with wind speeds of up to 100mph.

The key benefit for the studios is that the acoustic fencing enables scenes to be filmed without intrusive background noise. The timber also provides a pleasing aesthetic for the perimeter of this world-class creative space.

Another of our acoustic timber fencing projects was for Travis Perkins’ depot in Tilbury, Essex. In this case we designed, manufactured and installed 5m high acoustic fencing, together with automated gates. This was a new-build project and the timescales were particularly tight, yet we met the brief on time and within budget, working closely with Readie Construction.

Other types of acoustic fencing

Timber acoustic fencing is not ideal for every situation, so we also offer our economical Pro-acoustic noise barrier system that uses recycled plastic panels to reflect and absorb noise. Alternatively, our Pro-modular Acoustic Wall is an aesthetically pleasing system that is highly effective and very quick to install.

Polyurethane flexible bollards

Ideal solution in a location that is likely to be frequently hit by vehicles

Flexible bollards are manufactured from terrathane, a highly flexible type of polyurethane, the bollards are designed to bend and fold up to 90 degrees before standing right back up in its original position when the load is removed.

Not only does this reduce the damage to a vehicle upon impact, it avoids the need to replace the bollard in the event of an incident or crash and means they can be run over time and time again without damage.

Thanks to its reusability and suitability for use with vinyl graphics, aluminium hoarding is an excellent choice for applications such as town centre developments incorporating offices and shops, or prestigious residential projects. The clean appearance is also great for hospitals and schools, and in high-traffic areas, the hoarding can be used to display advertising, the income from which can more than pay for the cost of the hoarding.

Key Features

  • Aluminium hoarding panels are 2440 mm long by 1220 mm high, supported on steel posts and timber rails. The aluminium panels and steel posts are fully reusable, whereas the timber rails are not normally reused. However, the timber, which is available in C16 and C24 grades on request, comes from sustainably accredited sources.
  • Each panel consists of 0.12 mm sheets of aluminium bonded either side of a recycled composite core, resulting in a total thickness of 3 mm. The standard finish is white, but most customers use the panels as a substrate for applying vinyl graphics. While being robust enough for most applications, the panels can be easily cut and profiled in our factory or on-site. When finished with cover strips, header boards and footer boards, the completed hoarding has a very high-quality appearance.
  • If requested, we can supply and install additional temporary fencing to raise the height of the hoarding for additional security, either to prevent unauthorised access or to stop construction materials and debris straying from the site onto public areas. Talk to us about your requirements and we will recommend the best options for your circumstances.
  • We can also supply and install matching gates for pedestrians and vehicles, and framed viewing panels can be let into the panels. Alternatively, we can provide heavier-duty gates if additional security is desirable for the access points. A popular option is for us to take full responsibility for installing and connecting access controls, lighting and other electrical items. Sometimes lighting is for the benefit of pedestrians outside the hoarding, while at other times it is for those working inside. Lighting can also illuminate the graphics at night.

Our work

Our business has been involved in fencing for over 100 years and the company can trace its history back more than 275 years. Rest assured, therefore, that we have the knowledge and experience to meet your needs for aluminium construction site hoardings.

Furthermore, we always use our own teams of fully trained installers, not casual labour, to ensure the highest quality of installation possible.

In the event of the hoarding becoming damaged, we can very quickly repair or replace it as necessary to maintain the integrity of your construction site.

Automatic and manual balustrade gates

An alternative to steel palisade gates

Balustrade gates are an alternative to steel palisade gates and are generally used where aesthetics are also important. As an example, a tubular steel balustrade gate would more typically be used on a more prestigious site and one where the company had important visitors coming to it, whereas a palisade gate would more typically be used on an industrial site where the majority of the access was for employees, suppliers etc.

What are palisade gates?

Robust construction and anti-corrosion finish

Palisade gates can be used with palisade fencing or other types of fencing or walling to secure access points. We manufacture standard and custom palisade gates for vehicles and pedestrians, and our vehicular gates can be specified as single- or double-leaf swing gates, sliding gates (tracked or cantilevered) or telescopic gates. Furthermore, we offer a number of power and automation options, plus a choice of access control systems.

Our palisade gates are manufactured entirely from steel and are hot-dip galvanised for a long-lasting, corrosion-resistant finish. A tough polyester powder coat can be applied on top of the galvanising for improved aesthetics and additional corrosion protection; standard colours are green and black, but we can apply almost any other colour on request.

Depending on the size and specification, a palisade gate will normally be fabricated with a steel frame of square hollow section, braced as required. Pales are W or D section and attached using zinc-plated steel bolts and shear nuts, or stainless steel rivets for higher security. Adjustable hinges provide for easy installation and alignment, while a slide latch is installed as standard, with provision for a heavy-duty padlock. Double-leaf gates are equipped with drop bolts.

Key Features

  • Palisade gates are manufactured from steel and provide good security thanks to their resistance to cutting and climbing. We offer palisade gates in a wide variety of sizes and specifications, which makes them a very versatile option for perimeter security. Typically our palisade gates comply with relevant sections of BS 1722-12 (Fences – Specification for steel palisade fences) – be aware that some suppliers sell lower-specification palisade gates that are not compliant.
  • All of our palisade gates are hot-dip galvanised in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461 (Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles – Specifications and test methods). We also offer the option of polyester powder coating in black, green or your choice of colour, carried out in accordance with BS EN 13438 (Paints and varnishes – Powder organic coatings for hot-dip galvanised or sherardized steel products for construction purposes).
  • The steel pales can be D-section, W-section for higher security or other sections are available on request. Pale material thickness depends on the fence height and level of security required, and the pale head style options are rounded, rounded and notched, single-spiked or splayed triple-spiked. Standard fixings are galvanised steel bolts with tamper-resistant shear nuts, or stainless steel rivets can be used for higher security.
  • Palisade gates offer advantages over alternative types of security gate thanks to their robust construction, resistance to damage, the difficulty of climbing and visibility through the gaps between the pales. Our in-house design and fabrication capabilities mean we can easily adapt standard designs or create totally bespoke gates to suit your site requirements.
  • We only use our own teams of trained installers, not casual labour, so we can guarantee the quality of the installation. Alternatively, we can supply gates for installation by you or your contractor.
  • Thanks to their robust construction and anti-corrosion finish, palisade gates require little or no maintenance over their long lifetime. However, should a gate suffer any damage, we can readily replace individual pales or repair the framework.

Recycled materials saved from landfill and oceans

Our Pro-acoustic systems are manufactured from high strength reinforced polymers and are the only noise barrier product in the UK that is manufactured using over 95% recycled waste products in its manufacturing process.

Each panel is manufactured from recycled bottles that would have otherwise been sent to landfill all around the UK. This totally negates the use of timber and helps you to develop sustainable construction projects.

What’s more, it means that even when the product has exceeded its expected service life, the materials can be recycled all over again thus creating a circular economy.

We offer a complete turnkey service, from site surveys, design, supply and installation. As an industry leader, we also advise on different specifications of acoustic barriers, and the quality of our workmanship is second to none.

Pro-acoustic recycled noise barriers offer noise attenuation of up to 30 dB, depending on the specification. We can customise posts and panels to suit the site requirements, and we can also design, manufacture and install matching bespoke gates for pedestrian and vehicular access. The modular nature of the system also lends itself to the design and construction of enclosures for a plant, machinery and waste bins.

Typical applications for Pro-acoustic recycled noise barriers include airports, commercial and industrial premises, retail complexes, highways, rail and light rapid transit, and utility facilities.

Key Features

  • A major advantage of our Pro-acoustic recycled noise barriers is that the materials of construction are very long-lasting, with almost no degradation in acoustic performance with the passage of time. Panels and posts are virtually maintenance-free; however, graffiti is easy to remove thanks to the non-porous surface finish.
  • Standard colours are UV-stabilised green, grey and brown, but custom colours can be specified if quantities are sufficiently high.
  • The maximum span is 3000 mm, which is highly efficient for long runs of straight acoustic walling. Alternatively, shorter panels can be used to create curved noise barriers.
  • Pro-acoustic recycled noise barriers offer noise reduction of up to 30 dB (Category B3) with reflective panels and 27 dB (Category A3) with absorptive panels. Foam seals between the posts and panels prevent noise from penetrating any gaps, while H-section profiles seal the horizontal gaps between the plank-style panels.
  • Our Pro-acoustic recycled noise barriers are manufactured in the UK and comply with the requirements of BS EN 14388 (Road traffic noise reducing devices – Specifications). They resist extreme weather conditions and also withstand attack from aggressive substances such as salt spray and oil. Pro-acoustic recycled noise barriers have a design life of 40 years.

  • Panels are built up by alternating lightweight horizontal noise-proof ‘planks’ with H-section seal profiles. This method of construction means on-site installation is quick, easy and quiet, with little or no need for mechanical handling equipment, depending on the finished height required. Compared with alternative noise-proof fencing and walling, the installation can be up to 30 per cent quicker.

  • Recycled noise barriers are also attractive for those wanting to see plastics being reused to create a long-lasting functional product. Our Pro-acoustic noise barriers contain no wood products, so customers need not be concerned about the source of any timber.

  • We retain our own installation teams, rather than using casual labour, so you can be assured that we will work to the highest standards and adhere to your site health and safety requirements.
